This is something that came to my mind the other day specifically, but I think I've really been considering it at least somewhat for a while.
The difference between WRITING and STORYTELLING. The two go hand-in-hand, it's true, and the words could be used synonymously (unless you're talking about the actual act of writing as in putting-pen-to-paper) but there's a slight difference.
Writing includes things like overall plots and characterization but it's also focused on dialogue, narration, description, etc. It's the way that the actual prose (or poetry or music, but for the sake of this discussion, I'm only talking about prose) is composed and worded.
Storytelling focuses on the overall plot and characterizations. Storytelling is less concerned with how something is worded as long as the point gets across. One can be a very good storyteller with believable twists and a combination of comedy and drama without being a wonderful writer--as in, the specific words and phrases may be simple or on the opposite end of the spectrum. But as long as the story works, the storytelling is good.
Storytelling can be successfully done in summary. Detailed summary, of course, because a simple synopsis wouldn't do the story justice, but summary nonetheless. Writing is specifics. It's dialogue and description and narration.
They go together because one can't really publish a book or an essay without writing it. But even if the writing is fabulous, the storytelling may not be good. A character can have great lines and interesting situations but while that may be good writing, if the character is not acting like herself (or him--I'm not discriminating based on gender) than no matter how good the writing is, it's bad storytelling.
It's easy to lump these things together because if one suffers, the other does, and so does the overall product. It's hard to have one without the other at all. Writing can exist with bad storytelling, but in the case of prose, it cannot exist without any storytelling. Storytelling can exist without writing but the product would seem unfinished.
Marvel has been doing a load of retro variant covers, which is actually kind of clever. This is my favorite so far. Especially juxtaposed to the last page of the issue.
And the runner-up: Amazing Spider-Man #599 under the cut
This is what I get for looking up Torchwood comms on LJ.
People definitely want to start shit at SDCC.
For fuck's sake! Come on! It's a tv show! And the panels are supposed to be fun and informative! People are proposing to go into panel and turn their backs to the speakers.
Listen, I get it. CoE was not what most of the fandom expected or wanted.
But I will say this:
GROW UP
It's telly. The writers and creators don't go by what their fans want. They're not supposed to. They're supposed to do what's creatively for the best for the show. Sometimes it fucking sucks to be a fan because of this.
If you want to go into panel and ask a question like "why did you kill this character?" or "what was the theory/idea behind making this decision?" Do it! They'll respect you and answer your question as best they can!
James Moran wrote in his blog that they were doing what was creatively in the best interest of the show, and while I'm saddened by a lot of CoE, I believe him.
You don't like what happened? Write some fanfic but leave the creative team, and the actors alone.
And if this lots fucks Con for me, I'ma cut me some bitches.
I'm suffering from insomnia. I've never had a problem with sleeping since med school (chronic sleep deprivation means I can fall asleep at just about any point). This night float thing has wacked out my sleeping schedule. When I first started, I was going to completely convert my days and nights, and the first night was busy enough that I did just that. I slept like a log the next day, with my Breakfast-At-Tiffany's-esque sleeping mask (no need for ear plugs.
But the following night, and every night thereafter, it's been quiet. I've admitted 1-2 patients with enough of a gap to take a nap. Or two. For several hours. Tonight, I admitted a patient around 9:30, finished everything up by 10:30, and there's been nothing since then. I went to bed, slept for a few hours and haven't been able to go back to sleep. It's making sleeping during the day more difficult too. I feel like I need to get sleep then, because if I don't and it's a busy night, then I'll regret it.
Oh, yay, new patient! There's one cure of insomnia! Ta!
Things do not know their collective name the books have no idea what they contain the cigarettes are unaware of their potential the typewriter is not longing for hands the pictures have never looked in a mirror the violin is content to keep silent it has no mind that can be a conduit be re-created
The day's first cigarette is fragrance and glow fanfare! the ignorant silent ones those with no inkling longings or searching eyes the unfeeling immovable ones draw imperceptibly closer

Until the prince chose her and she came into her position of power, Cinderella was entirely helpless against the machinations that her step-family put to work against her.
Yes, I know, I put the word 'against' in that sentence twice. It's awkward, and I'm sorry. =/
So I spent the day with my mother. We had lunch and we shopped a bit.
And she decided that today was the day she would bring along the LULZ.
We're sitting in the restaurant at lunch, and I'm gushing about how I'm going to SDCC and that I'm SO EXCITED TO BE BREATHING THE SAME AIR AS DAVID TENNANT!
And she asks who that is, because when I gush about something fannish, she pays no attention so she doesn't remember anything I said about him last time.
I come to the part where he's Scottish and my mother asks this epic, epic question:
Leigh's Mom: Scottish...that means he's from Wales, right?
Leigh: *snorts and bursts into laughter*
Dear flisters, you must understand that this is not the first instance of this sort of comment. Way back when I was an itty-bitty 13-year-old, and perfecting a killer Swedish Chef impersonation, She looked at me blankly and said:
"Swedish Chef. He's Italian, right?"
Now, after I got a hold of myself today, and informed my mother that people who are Scottish are from Scotland, she then asked me:
gossip and gin This village had extraordinarily bad luck. Miss Marple/Lord of the Rings (Marple&Baggins) 1363 words notes: Yeah. You read that right. It saddens me that this is the first thing I've posted in ages. Now, I have written some lulzy things in my time, some seriously lulzy, questionable things. This is by far the worst. This is, I'm afraid, the result of a late-night game of fic!poker, wherein characters are gambled instead of money. This is my punishment for being the worst poker player in the world. Posted so the victors could see and rejoice, Julia? Lucy? I hope you're happy.
In the middle of work we start longing fiercely for wild greenery, for the Wilderness itself, penetrated only by the thin civilisation of the telephone wires.

The moon of leisure circles the planet Work with its mass and weight. -- That's how they want it. When we are on the way home the ground pricks up its ears. The underground listens to us via the grass-blades.

Even in this working day there is a private calm. As in a smoky inland area where a canal flows: THE BOAT appears unexpectedly in the traffic or glides out behind a factory, a white vagabond.

One Sunday I walk past an unpainted new building standing before a grey wet surface. It is half finished. The wood has the same light colour as the skin on someone bathing.

Outside the lamps the September night is totally dark. When the eyes adjust, there is faint light over the ground where large snails glide out and the mushrooms are as numerous as the stars.
“This is for Gina Mac because she requested some voice voice thingies. She get a post about well accents and whether or not she had one. So I figured I'd fill in my own voice and yeah I don't really think I have an accent maybe I do maybe I have like a Marilyn thing going on I'm not really sure at this point. There are occasions when I get really into something that I like start picking up that accents. It's really kind of nerdy but when I start to watch the Super Natural all of the sudden I started getting the Mid Western thing going on and it was like what? Why am I doing this to myself? Nerd. But yeah I don't really think I have an accent. I might. If I do it's probably something south as the Mace and Dixon cos that's where I live or it could have I don't know I don't know cos like sometimes I'll catch myself saying like pronouncing words like like my parents pronounce them which is like an NBI and the and the Jewish New Yorkian(?) scheme things which is like like like we don't say Florida we say Flarida(?) and Har instead of horror although I can go either way on that one. This is the funny word. Har horror blah blah blah. But yeah Florida is how my my my New Yorky(?) in the family pronounces the state name. But yeah I don't really think I have like an accent there whatever maybe I do. I never quite picked up like I I lived in Baltimore for a number of years but I I never quite picked up that whole Baltimore thing like I was in Baltimore Han. I never really did that. Unless I'm doing it now and don't realize it but I don't think I am. I think I too have kind of a neutral accent. If you think I'm rambling at you I'm sorry if you don't care but I just wanted to post the voice post and talk to myself. Name O.”
In honor of Torchwood: Children of Earth making me cry like a little bitch, I thought I'd do a bit of recapping of one of my very favorite Torchwood episodes.
That would the the Season 2 opener: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, staring the usual suspects...and Spike from Buffy.
Now the episode has its problems. For me, Gwen is a big one, since the only thing I've genuinely liked her in is Children of Earth.
I think on the whole Torchwood had a bunch of characterization problems. Sometimes it felt like the writers weren't sure what they wanted to do with them, or how they wanted the relationships to be. Which, if it was done well, could have been very true to life; Gwen not knowing what she wanted, and Jack wanting everyone etc. But sadly it mostly felt sloppy.
